THE MIRACLE OF HEALING

PART 7: HEALING COMES BY GOD'S LAW

In the name of God, Master of the universe, Ruler of the earth.

Healing flows from God and healing is rendered by the law of God. Also, repentance is a part of the healing process. In 1 Samuel 6:3 we find a scripture passage related to repentance and healing. However to get a better understanding of this scripture we will begin with 1 Samuel 5:1-22 and 6:1-21.

In 1 Samuel 5 God punishes the Philistines. This punishment resulted for the Philistine victory over Israel and the removal of the Ark of Covenant. The Ark of the Covenant is a chest of Acacia wood that contained the two tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron's budding rod and a golden urn filled with manna. (See Hebrews 9:4, Numbers 17:1-11, Exodus 16:33-34).

It was also suspended on poles that passed through rings on its sides and by which it could be carried. (See Exodus 25:10-22, 37:1-9). Therefore the record shows that the Ark of Covenant was very sacred to the Israeli people.

The Philistines believed in idols. Dagon was the chief god of the Philistines. They believed that this god could send rain and insure a bountiful harvest. However, they worshiped many gods like their heathen neighbors. Thus, they wanted many gods on their side including the Ark.

Meanwhile the Philistines thought they had defeated God because they had defeated Israel and captured the Ark. However they soon learned that God has all power, and God began to destroy them with the plague.

As the 5th Chapter of 1 Samuel concludes the 6th Chapter begins and the Philistines seek to return the Ark. Thus, the Philistines sought counsel from their priests and leaders. By this time they had concluded that the God represented by the Ark would not allow them to defy Him, the sacred Ark or His people. Thus, the leaders advised the Philistines to return the Ark.

1 Samuel 6:3; "And they said, If ye send away the Ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you."

The leaders of the Philistines gave God a few token gifts, not with regard to worship but in order to remove the plague. However, God does not want tokens of our time and resources in worship services. Our contributions and participation are only pleasing to God when they flow from the heart.

Meanwhile, the Philistine gesture was noted as a trespass offering. The Philistines, were heathens although they recognized their guilt in taking the Ark were trying to make amends to Israel's God. But the offering consisted of images of emerods and mice and not the kind of guilt offering prescribed in God's law (See Leviticus 5:14- 6:7, 7:1-10).

1 Samuel 6:9. "And see, if it goeth up by way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us."

The Philistine leaders developed a test to see if the God of Israel was really responsible for their troubles. Two cows that had just given birth were hitched to a cart and sent toward Israel's border carrying the Ark of the Covenant. Here the Supreme Power of God was revealed, a power that controls the natural order.

The cows defined the natural order and motherly instincts and went to Israel. Thus, God demonstrated His ultimate power.

However the Philistines although they acknowledged the existence of God, they did not accept God as the only true God. They still looked upon God as one of the many gods whose favor they sought. Therefore, they did not have God's command to worship him alone. God is not just an ingredient in a successful life. God is the source of life.
