THE NECESSITY OF UNDERSTANDING THE OLD AND NEW COVENANTS

Part 18: A Comparative Look AT The Old and New Covenants

Greetings Brethren,

Peace be unto you. Thanks be to Almighty God for blessing us to see another day. Thank you also Lord for our Son our Savior Christ Jesus and for the Holy Spirit.

Many things God has rendered to our understanding now, however some things will grow as we grow in the Truth of the word.

Beloved it is for sure that the greatest distinction between the Old and New Covenants is that the Old Laws were written while the New Law is freely embraced upon the human heart.

Thus the Old Covenant was placed upon stone and based upon the Law. It also had to be taught and was a legal relationship with God.

Meanwhile the New Covenant is placed upon the people’s heart. It is based on the desire to love and serve God. This New Covenant is also known by all. And lastly this New Covenant involves a personal relationship with God.

As we look more closely at a comparative analysis of the Old and New Covenant we often see that the New reveals an opposite view than the Old.

The Old Covenant under Moses: Involved gifts and sacrifices by those guilty of sin.

The New Covenant in Christ: Involves self-sacrifice by the guiltless. Christ died for the sins of humankind. Christ thus died for the sins of all God’s people.

The Old Covenant: Had a great focus on a physical building where one goes to worship. Meanwhile the New Covenant focuses on the reign of Christ in the hearts of all believers. With Christ God is directly involved in your life.

The Old Covenant presented itself as a model. Meanwhile the New Covenant is a living reality. It is not temporal but eternal. The Old Covenant is plagued with limited promises. However the New Covenant has limitless promises. Now we are able to trust God’s promises to us.

With the Old Covenant there was a failed agreement by the people. But under the New Covenant there is a faithful agreement by Christ. Thus Christ has kept the agreement where people couldn’t.

There was also under the Old Covenant external standards and rules. However the New Covenant has internal standards and a new heart. Almighty God sees both actions and motives, thus we are accountable to God, not rules.

Under the Old Covenant the people were restricted thus they had limited access to God. But the New Covenant allows unlimited access to God. Now with Christ God is personally available.

The Old Covenant was sassed on fear. Now under the New we are assured of love and forgiveness. Forgiveness keeps our failures from destroying the agreement.

Under the Old the only way to cleansing was by legal means. However there is a personal cleansing under the New Covenant God’s cleansing is complete.

There was no way to complete the ritual toward atoning for sin thus under the Old Covenant there was a continual sacrifice. But Christ has now allowed a conclusive sacrifice. The sacrifice of Christ was perfect and final.

There were various rules to be obeyed under the old Covenant. But the New Covenant changed that to serving the living God. We now have a relationship not regulations. You also had to earn forgiveness under the Old Covenant while now under the New Covenant forgiveness is feely given. Now we have true and complete forgiveness.

Meanwhile the Old Covenant stipulated yearly ritual for sin. Now Christ has made this compete with his death. Thus Christ dying on the Cross can be applied to your sin. Under the Old Covenant there was also a great emphasis on man’s efforts, his works. However now under the New we live under God’s grace, which is initiated by Gods love for you. While the Old Covenant was available to a select group of people the Jew the New Covenant is available to all.
